This is a temporary draft of this.........but I wanted to get this out before Thanksgiving. I shall "polish" it later (and rewrite it 12 times. :)
Once upon a time, a group of people risked their lives and their futures to come across a VERY big ocean and took a chance on an unknown place.....sight unseen. We know these bravepeople as the Pilgrims. They arrived in Massachussetes, and all was good.
The Pilgrims made friends with the native inhabitants of the land and successfully coexisted, sharing new foods, planing techniques etc. All was good. Well, that 'successfully coexisted" with the native inhabitants" part would not last, but it was still OK right then.
At the time of their first harvest, in the Fall (when else? huh?) the Pilgrims had a special day to enjoy the fruits of their hard work, and give thanks. They invited their friends...the native inhabitants. It was a very satisfying event where everyone could share the harvest, fellowship. All was good.........and I guess they decided to call it Thanksgiving somewhere along the line.
Years, go by......years and years, and years. THEN, Santa arrived. He was invited to help people celebrate Christmas. He was a marketing agent" so to speak to get people to spend money for stuff to give as gifts for Christmas. But, that holiday was over a month after the (now) traditional Thanksgiving holiday. Not a problem at all. Each holiday had its own time and purpose. And all was good................
But, THEN Santa decided to take over. Why should that Thanksgiving thing screw up the amount of time that Christmas had to sell stuff. Why did he need to shut up until AFTER Thansgiving. Seemed to him like it violated his civil right of free speech. He wanted to be able to talk about Christmas, whenever he wanted. BAD Santa! SUre he looks happy and jolley, but remember he is a media creation. The Pilgrims existed; Santa does not. BUT, since there was a direct correlation between time and money, Santa decided that the "buying season" for Christmas had to expand to "help the economy" and "keep workers employed. " (I guess he meant he workers in China, of course. Do you think Santa might be Chinese? If so, we have to change thos pictures we see of him everywhere. )
We are now at the brink of insanity. First Santa said that he would start his "sales cycle" the day AFTER Thanksgiving......now the busiest shopping day for all Pilgrims. Right up against Thanksgiving. That is when the older Pilgrims started to get screwed and scared about Santa. No one liked their Thanksgiving holiday anymore. The new class of "mall Pilgrims" just saw it as a "day that they had to make a lot of food and hang out with each other. The new mall Pilgrims could not understand the point of doing all of that and not even getting a present! Besides, we really need the time that is taken for that "worthless holiday" to shop for Christmas. And all was bad...........from then on................
I think that we should get together with the native inhabitants, and change Thanksgiving to February, when it can have its own time for appreciation of its original intent. If we moved it, do you think anyone would miss it......or even notice?
